Getting something bought in Japan to a UK address means crossing an international shipping leg and UK customs. How the Japan-to-UK chain actually works
A Japanese item reaching the UK passes through four stages. Knowing who owns each one tells you where the delays and the fees come from.
01 · Order placed in Japan
You order on the Japanese site yourself, or a Japan-based proxy shopper buys it on their own Japanese account or card. Many Japanese official stores reject overseas cards outright — this is the stage most UK buyers get stuck at.
02 · Delivered to the Japan warehouse
The seller or shopper sends the goods to the Japan consolidation warehouse, each order packed separately and labelled with its seller code and shipping number. Several orders can travel together to save on domestic postage.
03 · Consolidation + Japan→UK transport
On a two-week cycle, Michi Shipping consolidates the warehouse contents, handles the customs declaration, and books the Japan→UK air leg with roughly a 12-day buffer to keep arrivals on schedule.
04 · InPost delivery in the UK

How the cost is calculated: fixed box fee + weight-based forwarding
Michi Shipping charges two independent parts. The box fee is a flat lookup by size (InPost final-mile + Michi handling); the forwarding fee is billed on the seller-declared weight. They are not linked — a light, bulky item and a heavy, compact one can need the same box but forward for very different amounts.

The forwarding fee is billed continuously on the seller-declared actual weight, quoted live at checkout. Reference points for common weights:

UK import VAT and duty: how the £135 threshold works
This is where the arithmetic most often goes wrong. UK customs draws the line on the consignment value — item price plus shipping plus insurance — not on the item price alone.

Do you need a proxy shopper, or can you order yourself?
If you just want cheaper shipping and can already buy the item on the Japanese site, order it yourself and ship with Michi Shipping. You need a Japan-based shopper to buy on your behalf when:

How long does shipping from Japan to the UK take?+
From when the goods have all arrived at the Japan warehouse: 1–3 days to consolidate and clear for export, then the Japan→UK air leg runs to the next fortnightly dispatch, plus 3–5 working days for InPost delivery in the UK. If you buy in batches over a month, the whole thing is that month plus transit. Checkout shows the cut-off and the estimated arrival window for your cycle.
How is the Japan-to-UK shipping cost calculated?+

Is anything under £135 tax-free?+
No. £135 is the line between customs duty applying and not, and between VAT at the point of sale and on entry — it is not a tax-free allowance. Goods of £135 or under imported through a personal consolidation are still usually charged 20% import VAT plus a carrier handling fee on entry; they just avoid customs duty. The only near-tax-free case is a private gift under £39, and proxy-bought or commercial goods do not count as gifts.
Is import tax included in your shipping price?+
No. The Michi Shipping price covers only the Japan→UK transport and InPost delivery. Import VAT, customs duty and the carrier’s handling fee are paid by the recipient directly to the carrier on entry. We flag you when a declared value approaches £135 so you can decide whether to split the consignment.
Can I combine orders from several different sellers into one shipment?+
Yes, and doing so spreads the fixed costs. Each order must be packed separately and labelled with its own seller code and shipping number so the warehouse can tell which items belong to which order and where each one is going.
Where in the UK is it delivered?+
You choose an InPost Parcel Locker (enter the recipient’s chosen locker ID at checkout) or Home Delivery to a UK address. Both are handled by InPost UK for the final mile.
What cannot be shipped?+
Flammable goods — alcohol, fragrance, nail polish, aerosols, lighters; items with lithium batteries (power banks especially); fresh food, meat and dairy; unapproved medication; counterfeit goods.
